Many over the counter treatments are toxic and sometimes not as effective as natural solutions.
The easiest trick is to shave your head, but this isn't always viable...
Another is to douse your head in undiluted apple cider vinegar (or mayonnaise or olive oil) and to keep your head wrapped for 4-6 hours (some say just a half hour). Make sure your head is wrapped tight so the fumes are sealed in and do their thing to the lice and the nits (their exoskeletons can't stand vinegar). Doing this plus lots of combing should do the trick.
A more potent trick is to use an entire bottle of Nix Creme Rinse (popularised in the book 'The Lice Buster').
Another trick is petroleum jelly (it suffocates the adults and eggs).
A popular herbal treatment not approved by the FDA (which prohibits their advertising themselves as a cure) is HairClean 1-2-3.
