Description

Apple cider vinegar for acid reflux (aka heartburn) has to be Kevin Trudeau's all time favorite cure since he repeats it a zillion times.  There are a couple of theories as to why this works (many testify that does so and does so miraculously).  One is that if the stomach isn't producing enough acid, the lower sphincter valve opens up which causes spillage of acidic juices upstairs.  So naturally antacids can actually make the problem worse while apple cider vinegar can improve the situation.   Another theory is that the apple cider vinegar dilutes the PH of the stronger hydrochloric acid which allows food to still be digested but mitigates some of the damage caused when the acid spills out of the stomach.

Other tricks include saliva (chewing gum), chamomile, angostura bitters, gentian root (especially with ginger root, wormwood, and cayenne), licorice.  Be careful with licorice as too much of it can cause side effects.

  • Coffee, cola, and other carbonated beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Chocolate
  • Fried and fatty foods
  • Citrus fruits
  • Peppermint and spearmint
  • Tomato sauces
