Australian lifeguards frequently have vinegar on hand to treat stings from jellyfish.  What can happen is that the jellyfish stinger gets stuck in the human body which is constantly releasing poisons into the body.   Vinegar can then act to halt this release of poisons.

Hawaiian life guards use a mixture of vinegar and "Adolph's Meat Tenderizer" for jellyfish stings.
